(Battle array)

(One who understands/discerns)

(Raven)

(Wolf)

(False Altar)

(Covers in thick darkness)

Day 95 of 100 Days: “Destroying the Array of the Enemy” Read: Ps. 83

Chuck Pierce

Psalm 83 identifies the defeat of Midian as the model for how God intends us to destroy enemy structures that war against us.  Verses 9-12 declare:

Do to them as you did to Midian,as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,

10   who perished at Endorand became like refuse on the ground.

11   Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,

12   who said, “Let us take possessionof the pasturelands of God.”

Three important conclusions come from these verses.  First and foremost God wants to reduce our enemies to nothing.  He is not interested in neutralizing them or simply defeating them.  He wants to “waste” them in a way that makes it utterly impossible for them to be of any use or affect to anyone ever again.  This is what we can expect to occur provided we move with Him in the pursuit of our enemies.

Second, God wants to destroy all the heads of enemy structures.  According to verses 9-12 the Midianite army had six different “heads” it.  Deborah’s army fought against the first two heads, Sisera and Jabin, while G

Gideon’s army pursued the nobles and princes, Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah, and Zalmunna.  Each Midianite head brought a different dimension to the battle.  This can be seen in the names of each:

  • Sisera—“Battle array”
  • Jabin—“One who understands/discerns”
  • Oreb—“Raven”
  • Zeeb—“Wolf”
  • Zebah—“False Altar”
  • Zalmunnah—“Covers in thick darkness”

This list reveals what we need to see about every enemy structure we battle, overcome, pursue to destruction.  Each enemy will have an array of things that must be pursued and destroyed if we want to experience rest from our enemies.

Sisera’s Array

Sisera was the field general of the Caananite army in league with the Midianites.  He directed the battlefield array against Deborah. Sisera served the King of Hazor, Jabin (whose name meant “understands”).  Together these two, Sisera and Jabin, devised a strategy against Israel that included an overpowering force of 900 iron chariots.  In Judges 4 God revealed to Deborah His strategy to destroy this force.  When Deborah’s force (led by Barak) advanced, God completely destroyed Sisera’s army.  However Sisera escaped destruction and hid in the tent of Jael.  Sisera felt he was safe because Jael and her family were ethnic Midianites and the Midianite army was aligned with Sisera.  Sisera failed to realize that Jael’s family had abandoned its alignment with Midian to align with God’s people.  Thus while an exhausted unsuspecting Sisera slept confidently in Jael’s tent, Jael took a tent peg and hammered it into Sisera’s temple.

Hitting the Nail on the Head

Enemy structures come at us with a organization and strategy that is designed to look and feel overwhelming.  When the timing is right (Deborah was from the tribe of Issachar) and we advance with Him, God will destroy the enemy’s array.  As long as we keep advancing with God, we can be confident that He will leave no opportunity for our enemies to run and hide.  Jael may not have been a child of Israel but God positioned and aligned her to be at the right place and time to destroy Sisera.

Keep Advancing

We are in a time when we must advance until we see enemy structures destroyed.  At certain points it may seem we can never destroy them because the array of their structures is so vast and ordered.  As long as we advance with the Lord we can be confident that nothing can escape His judgment.

Release the Sound of the Tent Peg

We have often worshipped with the song that declares “Just like Jael.”  The Hebrew word used to describe the action and sound of Jael driving the tent peg into Sisera’s head is the word “Tekiah.”  Literally it means to drive a tent peg into the ground.  It is also the primary sound of the shofar—an extended blast—that declares God has raised His tent and set His boundaries over an area or structure.  When we blow the shofar over our lives and over the structures that war against us, it releases the hammer that strikes the peg into our enemies.  To learn more about Shofar sounds and listen to them click on the following link: http://blog.mightyshofar.com/?page_id=101.
